Why Screening Matters

Ibogaine Is Powerful Medicine. Safety Requires Thorough Evaluation

Ibogaine is one of the most effective interventions for opioid addiction, PTSD, and treatment-resistant depression. It is also a compound that demands rigorous medical screening. The primary risk is cardiac: ibogaine can prolong the QTc interval, and patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions face elevated risk. This is why every reputable ibogaine provider requires comprehensive screening before acceptance.

At MindScape Retreat, our medical team reviews each patient's complete history, bloodwork, EKG, and medication profile before making an eligibility determination. We reject approximately 15% of applicants based on medical contraindications. We would rather turn someone away than compromise safety.

The criteria below represent the major factors our clinical team evaluates. Use them as a preliminary self-assessment, then schedule a free prescreen for a definitive answer.

Key Eligibility Criteria

What Our Medical Team Evaluates

These are the primary screening categories. Meeting all criteria does not guarantee acceptance. Failing one criterion does not guarantee rejection. Every case is individually reviewed.

Cardiac Health

  • QTc interval below 450ms on recent EKG
  • No history of heart attack, cardiomyopathy, or significant arrhythmia
  • No pacemaker or implanted cardiac device
  • Blood pressure reasonably controlled

Medications

  • Willing to taper SSRIs/antidepressants before treatment (we assist with this)
  • Methadone patients: willing to undergo supervised taper (7 to 14 days)
  • Suboxone patients: willing to undergo supervised taper (3 to 7 days)
  • No current use of medications that prolong QTc interval

Medical History

  • No active seizure disorder
  • No severe liver disease (mild impairment may be acceptable)
  • No severe kidney disease
  • Not currently pregnant
  • No active psychosis or schizophrenia diagnosis

General Requirements

  • Age 18 or older
  • Ability to travel to Cozumel, Mexico
  • Commitment to the full treatment program duration
  • Willingness to provide complete medical history and bloodwork

Common Disqualifiers

  • QTc interval above 450ms
  • History of heart attack or cardiomyopathy
  • Active seizure disorder
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • Current pregnancy
  • Active psychosis or schizophrenia
  • Pacemaker or implanted cardiac device

These Do NOT Disqualify You

  • Active fentanyl or heroin use
  • Current methadone or Suboxone use (taper required)
  • Current SSRI use (taper required)
  • Prior ibogaine treatment
  • Age over 60 (with cardiac clearance)
  • Mild, controlled hypertension
  • History of depression, PTSD, or anxiety
  • Cannabis or kratom use

This Page Is Not a Medical Evaluation

The information on this page is for educational purposes and preliminary self-assessment only. It does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or a treatment recommendation. Only a qualified physician can determine whether ibogaine treatment is safe and appropriate for your specific medical situation.

MindScape Retreat's clinical team conducts comprehensive individual evaluations for every patient. Eligibility is determined through medical history review, physical examination findings, laboratory results, and EKG interpretation. No online tool can replace this process.

Eligibility Questions

Common Questions About Ibogaine Treatment Eligibility

The primary disqualifying conditions are cardiac abnormalities (prolonged QTc interval above 450ms, structural heart disease, arrhythmias), active seizure disorders, severe liver or kidney impairment, pregnancy, and certain psychiatric conditions including active psychosis or schizophrenia. Each case is evaluated individually during our medical screening process.

SSRIs and most antidepressants must be tapered and discontinued before ibogaine treatment due to serotonin syndrome risk. We have a dedicated SSRI discontinuation program that helps patients safely taper under medical supervision before their ibogaine session. The taper timeline depends on the specific medication and dosage.

We treat adults 18 and older. There is no upper age limit, but cardiac and overall health screening becomes more detailed for patients over 60. Many of our Parkinson's patients are in their 60s and 70s and undergo treatment safely with appropriate medical oversight.

Cardiac health is the most critical screening factor. We require a recent EKG (within 90 days) showing a QTc interval below 450ms. Patients with pacemakers, history of heart attack, cardiomyopathy, or significant arrhythmias are generally not candidates. Mild, well-controlled hypertension is usually acceptable with medical clearance from your cardiologist.

Yes, but these medications require a carefully managed taper before ibogaine administration. Methadone patients typically need 7 to 14 days of supervised tapering. Suboxone (buprenorphine) patients need 3 to 7 days. We provide medical supervision throughout the taper process as part of our treatment program.

The quiz gives you an immediate preliminary assessment. Regardless of your result, we recommend scheduling a free prescreen consultation with our medical team. They will review your complete medical history, current medications, bloodwork, and EKG to make a definitive eligibility determination. No one is accepted or rejected based on the quiz alone.

This quiz covers the major eligibility criteria our medical team evaluates. It is a screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. Some people who flag concerns on the quiz may still be eligible after medical review, and vice versa. The only definitive eligibility determination comes from our clinical team during the prescreen process.

Yes. Active fentanyl users are among our most common patients. Ibogaine is particularly effective for fentanyl dependence because it resets opioid receptors and dramatically reduces withdrawal symptoms. The main requirement is cardiac clearance and absence of other contraindicated conditions. We do not require patients to be 'clean' before arriving.
