The 14-day rule: who qualifies for an urgent passport

Step one: get proof of your travel

Passport agencies want documentation that your international travel is real and imminent. Accepted proof includes a flight itinerary or ticket — and for medical travel, a signed letter on official letterhead documenting your scheduled treatment abroad.

Step two: call 1-877-487-2778

That number is the National Passport Information Center — the official government line for passport agency appointments. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern, and weekends 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern.

Tell the agent you have international travel within 14 days and need an Urgent Travel appointment. They will book you at the nearest passport agency with availability.

3. Government photo ID — driver's license or state ID, plus a photocopy

5. Fees — $130 for the passport book, a $35 execution fee for first-time applicants, and the $60 expedited-service fee, all paid to the U.S. Department of State

What about Mexico's requirements?

Simple: U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays in Mexico under 180 days. A valid passport book is all you need to fly. Note that a passport card is not valid for air travel — make sure you apply for the book.
