Sergey Brin's nonprofit Catalyst4 is investing $15 million in Soneira, a biotech startup planning clinical trials on ibogaine for traumatic brain injury. However, Soneira's patent application for an ibogaine-plus-magnesium protocol — a practice already standard in clinics worldwide — has drawn sharp criticism from the ibogaine community and IP watchdog Porta Sophia. Through his nonprofit Catalyst4, Brin is providing $15 million of a $25 million funding round for Soneira, a biotech public benefit corporation that plans to launch clinical trials investigating ibogaine as a treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). The investment signals growing mainstream interest in ibogaine's therapeutic potential — and the scale of capital beginning to flow into psychedelic medicine. Brin, who sold $366 million in Tesla shares three years ago, appears to view ibogaine research as a high-impact philanthropic and scientific opportunity.

Soneira is also reportedly working on creating a synthetic version of ibogaine, which could allow the company to develop patentable compounds and potentially secure a more conventional pharmaceutical pathway. The Patent Problem Not everyone is celebrating. Soneira filed a patent application for an ibogaine administration protocol that combines the compound with electrolytes like magnesium and potassium "in an amount effective to achieve a physiologic effect to reduce risk of a drug-induced long QT syndrome.

" The problem? Using magnesium alongside ibogaine is already standard practice in clinics worldwide. It's explicitly recommended in the Global Ibogaine Therapy Alliance (GITA) clinical guidelines and has been part of established safety protocols for years.

"Given the widespread use of magnesium supplementation in ibogaine clinics globally, it is difficult to fully comprehend the IP pathway Soneira appears to be taking," said Jeremy Weate, director of GITA. Porta Sophia, a nonprofit that works to protect the psychedelic public domain, has filed a formal objection to the patent application, arguing it attempts to patent existing knowledge. This echoes broader concerns in the psychedelic space about corporations patenting traditional practices and well-known protocols. What This Means for the Ibogaine Community The Soneira story captures the central tension in psychedelic medicine's commercialization: how do you attract the capital needed for FDA-quality clinical trials without allowing corporations to monopolize treatments that have been used by Indigenous communities for centuries and refined by underground practitioners for decades?

The $15 million investment will likely accelerate clinical research — a genuine benefit. But if broad patents are granted on established practices, it could restrict access and increase costs for the very patients who need treatment most. The MindScape Perspective At MindScape Retreat , we've used magnesium co-administration as part of our cardiac safety protocol since day one. It's not a novel invention — it's responsible medicine.

Every ibogaine clinic operating at a professional standard does the same. We welcome serious investment in ibogaine research. The more rigorous clinical data that exists, the stronger the case becomes for broader access. What concerns us — and should concern anyone seeking ibogaine treatment — is the possibility that patents on existing practices could create barriers rather than remove them.

Our position is clear: ibogaine treatment should be accessible, affordable, and safe. We'll continue providing medically supervised treatment using established best practices regardless of the patent landscape. Patients shouldn't have to wait for corporate timelines or navigate IP disputes to get the help they need. The ibogaine community's strength has always been its commitment to patient outcomes over profit.

We hope that remains true as larger players enter the space.
